The A-10C is an updated version of the 30-year old A-10A. The cockpit has two-F-16
style 5.5 inch color displays, a moving map display and other electronic upgrades while
keeping the A-10 ability to function as a CAS aircraft/tank killer. They have taken the best
of the “new” and matched it with the best of the “old” and come up with one mean
machine. The A-10C has already seen combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. The A-10 motto,
“Go Ugly Early”.
Fairchild Republic A-10C Thunderbolt II 82-0661 was c/n 709 and first assigned to the
353rd TFS/354th TFW Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, South Carolina. This aircraft
participated in Operation Desert Storm with the 75th FS/23rd FW, Pope AFB, NC, was
sent to AMARC on May 15, 2001 but returned to service July 19, 2001. The aircraft was
in service until January 17, 2006 when it again was sent to AMARC. Once more it was
returned to service but with the 23rd FS/23rd FW. In 2010 the 163rd FS, Indiana ANG
“Blacksnakes” received their A-10 equipment and 82-0661 was part of it. In 2011
82-0661 was the Boss Bird.
