Herpa American Airlines DC-6
I was really looking forward to this this release but a few major flaws really brought this down to an overall two star model. First the shape of the nose is off just enough to ruin the whole aircraft profile (ouch). Second, the silver painted plastic parts (engine cowls, horizontal and vertical stabs) do not blend at all with the chrome wing and fuselage. The light grey painted windows blend in with chrome so as to to be almost invisable. Fix the nose shape and I could have lived with the rest. The AA paint job was excellent so maybe add 1/2 star. I also liked the way the cowl flaps were left in the open position. Review by Steve (Posted on 5/23/2011)
Herpa 200 American Airlines Douglas DC-6A/B "Flagship Kentucky" N90771(cn 44056/353)
In the 1940s, American Airlines, like most airlines around the world were going through growing pains. The war slowed progress. The airlines needed a moderate capacity aircraft, one with moderate to long range capabilities to replace the DC-3. N90771 was built in 1953 and was delivered to American in August 3, 1953, along with a slew of other DC-6s. The airframe flew with AA through Sept., 1961 and served AA through 1962. It was sold to TAMP in 1973 and damaged beyond repair during a landing at Mitu, May 21, 1994. I am a prop junkie and this model is one, like most of us, waited a long time for Herpa to go from announcing the model and receiving it. There are only four images of this airframe on Airliners.net but none of them in the colors of American. The photos are useful in comparing the model with the airframe. On my copy of the model I was bothered by the angle of the nose gear but the four images verify the funnel angle of the gear, though other critics did bend to a less sharp angle. There are also some issues concerning the glare shield in front the cockpit windows which one person repainted on his copy of the model. There are other specific issues that you might want to examine. goto: http://www.400scalehangar.net/forums/showthread.php?t=51688 Regardless of the issues I am still glad to add this model. It will go good with my other models of American of the same era and liveries. Soon we will have couple more DC-3s to go with the original Western Model's version from years ago.
