The F-111 was used as an all-weather attack aircraft capable of low-level penetration of enemy territory. It also could be used for reconnaissance and electronic warfare. Some unique features are variable geometry wings, the 2 crew members sat side by side in an escape capsule, internal weapons bay; terrain following radar and afterburning turbofans. The USAF retired their last F-111 in 1998 but the RAAF continued to use theirs. The use of the name “Ruptured Duck” was first used on B-25B 40-2261 and was one of Jimmy Doolittle’s Raiders. The next aircraft to use the name was the B-24H 42-95354 of the 389th Bomb Group (H) and then with the 564th Bomb Squadron at RAF Hethel between June 13, 1943 to May 20, 1945. The latest user of the name “Ruptured Duck” is FB-111A constructed in 1967 as c/n 10 serial 67-7196 and in 1989 was assigned to the 393rd BS, 509th BW, Pease AFB. The aircraft was later converted to an F-111G.
