The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a twin-engine, variable sweep wings capable of supersonic flight. The aircraft is crewed by a Pilot and a Radar Intercept Officer who share the tasks of navigation, target acquisition, ECM and weapons usage. The Tomcat was operated by the United States Navy and the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force only. The name “Tomcat” is said to come from the call-sign used by Vice Admiral Thomas Connolly which conformed to the USN tradition of giving Grumman aircraft feline names. VF-1 “Wolfpack” was established on October 14, 1972 and was the 4th USN squadron to use the designation. On July 1, 1973 VF-1 received the first of its F-14As with their first deployment taking place on the USS Enterprise between September 12, 1974 and May 19, 1975. This marked the first operational cruise for the F-14. Between July 30, 1976 and March 8, 1977 VF-1 once again deployed onboard the Big E. After returning in March 1977 F-14A 158996 was transferred to VF-2 and lost on June 26, 1977.
