The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a twin-engine, variable sweep wings capable of supersonic flight.
The aircraft is crewed by a Pilot and a Radar Intercept Officer who share the tasks of navigation,
target acquisition, ECM and weapons usage. The Tomcat was operated by the United States
Navy and the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force only. The name “Tomcat” is said to come from the
call-sign used by Vice Admiral Thomas Connolly which conformed to the USN tradition of giving
Grumman aircraft feline names.
VF-84 “Jolly Rogers” began transitioning to the new F-14A Tomcat in 1977 and when training
ended they were assigned to the USS Nimitz (CVN-68) in December 1977 for their first cruise
with the Tomcat. Throughout the 1980s they sailed the Mediterranean several times, spent time
off the coast of Lebanon when a TWA flight was hijacked and sailed the Caribbean. The CAG
aircraft was AJ200/BuNo. 162688 and remained with VF-84 until 1996 when it was assigned to
VF-101. VF-84 remained with the USS Nimitz until 1987.
