Gemni Jets 200 Frontier Convair CV-580 N73160 (cn 336)
Many of us relate to this hobby through various experiences flying or seeing various aircraft. For me when I first started coming out to Colorado in the late 60s through early 70s I got to see the old Frontier. The Frontier section of old Stapleton International Airport it was not unusual to see a half doze of these aircraft at the gates in various states of boarding, unboarding, fueling, arriving, pushing back and getting to see passengers walk out on the tarmark was another wonderful feature of this era. On Airliners.net you can find 5 images of this aircraft: http://www.airliners.net/search/photo.search?cx=partner-pub-8297169501225184%3Aa05n2n-tzky&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=N73160+&sa=Submit&search_active=1&search=&sheadline=&search_field=datedesc&submit=&siteurl=www.airliners.net%2F&ref=&ss=9294j86378436j2 This aircraft was delivered to Sabena as a Convair 440 in 1956; bought by Frontier in Sept., 1967 and placed in service following the turboprop conversion. After a period of storage, bought by Sierra Pacific in March, 1988 and leased to Aspen Dec., 1988.. On Jan. 19, 1989 the no. 2 engine failed at FL200 outbound from DEN. No. 1 engine then also failed and the aircraft landed on a dirt road at Buena Vista,, CO hitting a fence and a log pile causing the nosegear to collapse. No fatalities but the air craft was damaged beyond repair. On this model the old Frontier liver is perfectly depicted in color and in postion. Landing gear is scaled and the tires spin. The hub caps could have had more detail than what GJ puts out on this model There is room for lug nuts to be depicted on the hub caps but they are not on this model. Printing of cargo bay doors, passenger doors and windows is all perfect and adds great detail to the model. The giant props spin and the engines depict the 580 Convair modifications that took it from a 440 to 580. The model also shows the landing lights and earning lights nicely. The cockpit shape and windows are perfect with the images on A-Net. The radio antenna aft of the cockpit is the right size and position puts another great detail on the model. I am glad to add this model into my "old" Frontier collection. Hopefully soon we will see their MD80s and B737-200s in these colors.
