To better protect the KV-1 bolted on armor was added. In July 1941 M1940 KV-1s had appliquéd armor panels applied and were re-designated KV-1E Model 1940 [E stands for "s Ekranami" – literally KV with screens also referred to as appliquéd armor]. The added armor worked but overall it was more of a hindrance than help. This modification along with a few others brought the weight from 43 tonnes to 50 tonnes and added so much weight that there were frequent drive train breakdowns. But most losses came from Ju-87s, infantry with flamethrowers and anti tank guns like the Flak 36. Around the end of June 1942 German forces of 300,000 troops with 3,000 artillery pieces and 300 tanks were advancing to cross the Don River and weren’t far from Stalingrad. Stalin knew he had to stop or slow the German advance so he sent 200,000 troops, 100 artillery pieces, 258 T34/76 and 40 KV-1 Heavy Tanks to Stalingrad. When the Germans stopped to re-supply the Soviet 1st Tank Army launched a counter-attack and the 40 KV-1s were sent to smash their way into the enemy and do as much damage as possible. Eventually the Soviets were over powered but that wasn’t until late August 1942 when the Soviet 1st Tank Army was eliminated.
