The M18 was the fastest tracked AFV of WWII reaching speeds up to 60 mph. The speed was possible because of the lack of heavy armor. The theory was speed would be the vehicles protection. Quite often German Panthers and Tigers would fall victim to the M18 because the German tanks turret couldn’t turn fast enough to return fire. The M18 was also present in the war in the Pacific. The ROC M18s were used in tank battalions instead of specialized tank destroyer units. In the 1950s were in service with the 1st Armored Division near Hokou and the 2nd Armored Division near Taichung. The M18s were left in their original olive drab they wore when they arrived from the U.S. but eventually were painted in a 3-tone scheme with a dark green base coat and over sprayed with dark brown and black with the vehicle registration on the hull side in white paint. The ROC received 214 M18 Hellcats.
