The eight-wheeled Sd.Kfz.234/4 was created as a stop gap measure. Designed as an anti-
tank destroyer it was in a way similar to the Marder Tank Destroyer because it was poorly
armored and had an open top making the crew very vulnerable. This vehicle was able to
neutralize almost every enemy tank of that time as long as it wasn’t a head to head
engagement. The Sd.Kfz.234/4 was primarily used by reconnaissance companies and
provided anti-tank support for other reconnaissance vehicles.
226.Aufklarungsabteilungen (armored Reconnaissance detachment) belonged to 116.Panzer-
Division that was known as the “Windhund Divisonen” (Greyhound Division). 116.Pz Div.
was formed in March 1944 and sent to the Pas-de-Calais. From August 7th – 13th the 116.Pz
Div. was involved in Operation Luttich, a failed German counteroffensive that saw German
forces being encircled in the Falaise Pocket. From August 12th – 21st the Germans were on
the defensive and eventually some did escape with heavy losses. By August 21st the
116.Pz Div. only had 600 men and 12 tanks left.
