The F/A-18s first flew in November 1978 and the first production flight on April 12, 1980. The first 380 aircraft were F/A-18As and in September 1987 production switched to the F/A-18C. Variants A and C are single-seat aircraft while B and D are tandem-seats. The Hornet can operate from either aircraft carriers or land bases with the capability of in flight refueling. A total of 1,480 A-D variants were built. VA-25 “Fist of the Fleet” began training on the new F-18A Hornet in May 1983 and in July that year they were re-designated Strike Fighter Force 25 (VFA-25). Beginning in 1992VFA-25 transitioned to the new F-18C variant and eventually in 2012 they started flying theF-18E Super Hornet. In 1998 VFA-25 deployed onboard the USS Abraham Lincoln for the first time. In 2003 VFA-25 sailed to the Arabian Gulf to enforce the no-fly zone in Iraq. F/A-18C 164633 was delivered to VFA-25 in October 1991 and served as the CAG aircraft.
