A brief history of the aircraft type and the airline is supplied with each model. The MD-11 is a 3-engine medium-to-long haul wide-body jet airliner originally produced by McDonnell Douglas. In 1997 McDonnell Douglas merged with Boeing and the MD-11 became a Boeing project. Originally the projected sales called for 300 aircraft but in reality only 200 were produced. In December 1986 the MD-11 was given the go ahead for production with the first flight on January 10, 1990. On December 7, 1990 Finnair was the first airline to receive the MD-11. Delta Airlines was the first U.S. MD-11 carrier. On May 1, 1992 McDonnell Douglas MD-11 MSN 48474 was delivered to Delta Air Lines as N803DE. On March 26, 2003 it was sold to World Airways and continued to fly as N803DE. In 1975 the Vietnam War ended creating thousands of orphans and World Airways charitably began an airlift using their DC-8 and it became known as Operation Babylift”. In 2005 on the 30th anniversary World Airways painted N803DE in the retro scheme of 1975 and returned to Vietnam with some of the now grown up orphans to see their birth land.
