The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a twin-engine, variable sweep wings capable of supersonic flight. The aircraft is crewed by a Pilot and a Radar Intercept Officer who share the tasks of navigation, target acquisition, ECM and weapons usage. The Tomcat was operated by the United States Navy and the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force only. The name “Tomcat” is said to come from the call-sign used by Vice Admiral Thomas Connolly which conformed to the USN tradition of giving Grumman aircraft feline names. VF-1 and VF-2 were established on October 14, 1972 at NAS Miramar. VF-1 “Wolfpack” was the 4th USN squadron to use the designation and on July 1, 1973 VF-1 received the first of its F-14As. The Wolfpack’s first cruise came aboard USS Enterprise in September 1974 and saw their first combat mission flying cover over Saigon in April 1974 when U.S. personnel were being evacuated during Operation Frequent Wind. In 1993 VF-1 was disestablished. F-14A 158979 went to AMARC in 1990 and scrapped in 1992.
