The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a twin-engine, variable sweep wings capable of supersonic flight. The aircraft is crewed by a Pilot and a Radar Intercept Officer who share the tasks of navigation, target acquisition, ECM and weapons usage. The Tomcat was operated by the United States Navy and the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force only. The name “Tomcat” is said to come from the call-sign used by Vice Admiral Thomas Connolly which conformed to the USN tradition of giving Grumman aircraft feline names. In 1989 VF-24 “Fighting Renegades” onboard the USS Nimitz had been at sea and upon returning to San Diego in August the squadron began to re-equip with the F-14B making them the first Pacific Fleet Fighter Squadron to do this. Originally thought to be an interim aircraft before receiving the F-14D it turned out that a decision was made to end the F-14D acquisitions and equip Pacific Fleet squadrons with F-14As and remaining F-14Ds then move all F-14Bs to the Atlantic Fleet. This aircraft is on display at the Estrella Warbird Museum.
