IThe MiG-29 is a twin-engine supersonic fourth generation air superiority jet fighter developed in the Soviet Union in the 1970’s. The aircraft entered service with the Soviet Air Force in 1983 and still is in use with them as well as equipping over twenty four other countries over the years. The NATO designation for the MiG-29 is Fulcrum and it was designed to counter the American F-16 and F-18. The MiG-29 was first seen in the West in 1986. The MiG-29 (9-13) is designated the Fulcrum C.
The Hungarian Air Force (Magyar Légierő) 59th Tactical Fighter Wing had two Tactical Fighter Squadrons, 1st Puma Repülöszazad (Cougars) and 2nd Dongo Repülöszazad (Bees) located at Kecskemet Air Base. From 1993 until December 2010 each squadron was equipped with eleven MiG-29B and three MiG-29UB. One of the MiG-29s with the 1st TFS was Black 04 c/n 296053127 f/n 4508. In 2003 these MiGs were overhauled and repainted in low-visibility schemes. In 2010 the Hungarian Air Force replaced the MiG-29s with the SAAB JAS-39 Gripens.
