A menacing night ghter, the P-61 Black Widow was introduced by Northrop in 1944. It was one of the era’s most modern aircraft, and the rst ever speciically designed to use radar. Though it rst saw combat duty in Europe, the Black Widow had its greatest success helping the Allies secure victory against the Japanese the following year. Among the units receiving the new twin-engine warbird was the 548th Night Fighter Squadron, an outtt responsible for interceptor coverage during B-29 bombing campaigns over Japan. It was also the squadron credited with the nal aerial victory of the war, taking down a Nakajima Ki-44 on August 14, 1945.
