During the Iraq-Iran War, Major Terry Pappas and Captain John Manzi launched their SR-71A from Kadena Air Base in
Okinawa, Japan, with a distant target in the Persian Gulf. Facing perhaps the most ominous weather of their ying
careers, they were required to stay in close formation with the refueling tanker aircraft — often within 12 feet —
for nearly a third of their harrowing journey. Ultimately, the Blackbird required ve air refuelings, and the non-stop
ight took over 11 hours, one of the most grueling and challenging missions ever attempted by the Air Force pilots.
