The cockpit has two-F-16 style 5.5 inch color displays, a moving map display and other electronic upgrades while keeping the A-10 ability to function as a CAS aircraft/tank killer. They have taken the best of the “new” and matched it with the best of the “old” and come up with one mean machine. The A-10C has already seen combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. The A-10 motto, “Go Ugly Early”. Originally formed as the 47th Pursuit Squadron in December 1940 and after several designation changes the squadron was deactivated in 1960 only to be reactivated in reserve on October 1, 1973 as the 47th TFS assigned to the 917th TFG at Barksdale AFB, Louisiana until 2013. In 1980 the 47th TFS traded their A-37 Dragonfly aircraft for the A-10. On February 1, 1992 they were redesignated 47th Fighter Squadron assigned to the 917th FG. On October 1, 2011 the 47th FS converted from a training unit to a combat unit.
