2012 is the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. At the beginning of February 1952, Princess Elizabeth, along with the Duke of Edinburgh, set off for a Royal Tour of the Commonwealth. They departed from London Airport in BOAC Argonaut G-ALHK and were seen off by her father, King George IV.
The initial destination was Nairobi in Kenya, then a British colony, and was reached via a refuelling stop in El Adem. The Princess was to spend time at the famous Treetops Hotel and it was whilst she was there that she received news of her father's death from lung cancer on February 6th. Plans were immediately drawn up for the new Queen to return to Britain and it was the same Argonaut, G-ALHK that undertook the journey. At 16:30 on February 7th HM Queen Elizabeth II descended the steps from the Argonaut's rear port door and set foot on British soil for the first time as Monarch.
