Goof Rendition of the Last UAL 72'
In terms of 1:200 series aircraft, there is IF200 and then there is everyone else. They have maintained their high standards on this excellent model of one of the last re-powered 727-222’s to fly for UAL with virtually all going out of service never to return shortly after the post 9-11 slump in air travel (my last flight on one was ORD-BWI in October 2001 and the flight crew told me it was headed out to the desert for deregistration in a matter of days!). The 72's low lines and rear tri-jet configuration better than any other showcased UAL’s great ‘battleship’ livery of the 1990’s, which was in my opinion the best and most innovative they ever did —and the model reminds us how good the scheme really looked when it was new, with the few aircraft still flying in that livery now badly faded. IF200 has as usual faithfully reproduced the antennae and markings, and the piece has a solid heirloom-quality feel despite the realism of the model suggesting it is much lighter. On that note I had been considering getting one of the Herpa Premium series models, which does have some finer detail (e.g., seams and wiper blades) it is harder to capture in a solid metal casting but with this one now in my collection I no longer see the need to pay the huge markup the Herpas now command. Inflight200 United Airlines N7277U / 5877 (cn 21424/1393)
N7277U started out with Untied Airlines in the Saul Bass colors and then moved on to the battleship gray. Personally I think of the modern UAL colors the battleship gray looks best on all their aircraft. This model is 1 of only 240 pieces. IF has massed the colors of the era very well. Cockpit shape and cockpit windows match up well on the 1:1. Rolling tires are scaled landing gear add further details as do the cargo bay door markings. Passenger windows and clearly printed. I also have the Premium Herpa UAL 722 and think this one is actually better. The engine shape and size seems more closely representing the actual aircraft. The typeface used for "United Airlines" seems to match the size better on the IF version vs. the Herpa. Herpa is mostly plastic and IF is metal. Review by James F (Posted on 1/11/2011)
