Hobby Master 200 West Coast Airlines Fokker F-27 N2703
This is my first F-27 in 200 scale and I really like it. The replica has an interesting history. When I first started to look up the history of the aircraft I found the Canadian West Coast Air. They flew only sea planes and are still flying today. Finally I zoomed in on West Coast Airlines which was based out of Seattle. The aircraft was built in 1958 and delivered to WCA Aug. 8, 1958 and flew for them till it crashed into Great Salt Lake on a training mission Jan. 17, 1963. There were three on board, all died in the crash which was blamed on "The crew's lack of vigilance, for undetermined reasons, in not checking the descent before striking the water," according to the accident report. (http://aviation-safety.net/database/record.php?id=19630117-0) West Coast Air operated DC-3 service throughout Washington state and Oregon. CAB awarded its new regional or 'feeder' airline certificate to Empire Air Lines based in Boise, Idaho in 1946. Empire merged with West Coast Air in August 1952 to form West Coast Empire Airlines. Empire was later dropped from the name. Both airlines networks merged giving West Coast Air coverage from Washington state and Oregon to Idaho, Montana and Utah and Jackson in Wyoming. Airlines fleet of DC-3s needed to be replaced because many airports served had inadequate runways giving the high altitude, mountainous terrain and high temperatures in the summer. West Coast Air introduced Fairchild F-27 in September 1958 becoming first operator of the type. By the late 1960's airline was flying as south as San Francisco and north to Calgary and Salt Lake City. In September 1966 first pure jet a DC-9 was put into service. Airline also utilized Piper Navajos on its Sun Valley, Idaho routes. In April 1968 West Coast Air merged with another two regional airlines Pacific Air Lines of San Francisco and Bonanza Air Lines of Phoenix both of which were also Fairchild F-27 operators to form Air West (from rzjets.net profile.) Of the pictures I found I think this model mould is well done except maybe the nose could be a little more pointed. The model has many features that I enjoy in scale models. Landing gear is scaled and the tire wheels have hub caps on them. The engine detail is superb and has spinning props with a red nub. They look great. Leading edge of the wing and tail are in black and were part of the deicing system the aircraft used. Passenger winds and passenger doors and cargo door are clearly printed. There is a radio antenna just behind the cockpit. The cockpit shape is correct as are the cockpit windows. The model also comes with a stand. Review by James F (Posted on 8/17/2012)
