The Boeing C-17 came to fruition in the early 1970's when the United States Air Force needed a new aircraft with the adaptable versatility of the C-5 Galaxy, yet with the load capacities of the C-141 Starlifter and the C-5 Galaxy. With the USAF having communicated its requirements with both Boeing and McDonnell-Douglass, both companies came up with flyable prototypes, neither of which were initially chosen.
