The M60 was initially introduced in 1960 and often incorrectly referred to as a Patton. The M60 resembled the M48 because it was based on the M48 but with some significant alterations and improvements. M60 has a 105mm Main Gun while the M48’s was 90mm and the front slope was straight compared to the M48’s rounded front plus other modifications. The M60 was the last U.S. tank to use homogenous steel as well as an escape hatch in the floor for the driver.
Taiwan wanted the M1 Abrams tank but the U.S. refused so a program was created to develop new upgrades for their 400 M60A3 tanks. The evaluations of the upgrades are taking place in 2019 to be implemented in 2020. These upgrades include new fire control systems, sighting systems, turret control and environmental controls against NBC (Nuclear, Biological and Chemical) threats. An automatic loading system for a possible 120mm smooth-bore gun upgrade enabling it to fire modern Western ammunition. An Active Protection System is possible to replace the old steel armor in use now.
